چکیده

The influence of gastric juice on iron absorption has been studied extensively in recent years. The absorption of haemoglobin iron is unaffected by achlorhydria (Biggs, Bannerman, and Callender, 1962) but inorganic iron is better absorbed in the presence of normal gastric juice (Goldberg, Lochhead, and Dagg, 1963; Cook, Brown, and Valberg, 1964). It has been shown that the administration of hydrochloric acid to patients with achlorhydria will increase iron absorption (Jacobs, Bothwell, and Charlton, 1964) but it has also been suggested that other gastric juice constituents also play a part. Koepke and Stewart (1964) and Murray and Stein (1967) have produced evidence from experiments in dogs and rats that the stomach secretes an absorptionpromoting factor which is increased in some conditions associated with high iron absorption. Davis, Luke, and Deller (1966), on the other hand, demonstrated an iron-binding protein in normal gastric juice which was absent in patients with high iron absorption. They suggested that this substance, which they call gastroferrin, inhibits inorganic iron absorption and that variations in its secretion provide a physiological mechanism for regulating the uptake of iron from the body. The object of the present study was to see whether normal human gastric juice influences the absorption of inorganic iron in human subjects with gastric atrophy when given together with a standard meal under conditions in which gastric pH is maintained at neutrality. Clear evidence was produced that gastric juice promotes iron absorption even when the local effect of acid is eliminated. No inhibitory effect was observed.

Malabsorption of hemoglobin iron in pernicious anemia: correction with intrinsic factor--containing substances.

Hemoglobin iron absorption in patients with treated prenicious anemia (PA) and concomitant iron deficiency was low compared to absorption in patients with iron deficiency alone. Crude and purified hog intrinsic factor (IF) concentrates doubled the absorption of hemoglobin iron in these patients as did normal (neutralized depepsinized) human gastric juice. Hemoglobin iron absorption was not sign...

Concentrations of metals in gastric juice in health and peptic ulcer disease.

The concentrations of essential metal cations in gastric juice, collected at endoscopy from 17 normal patients and 11 with peptic ulcer disease, were determined by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry. Mean fasting levels in normal gastric juice were as follows: sodium 47.7 mM, potassium 14.6 mM, calcium 0.8 mM, magnesium 0.36 mM, zinc 13 microM, and copper 1.2 microM: these did not...

HELICOBACTER PYLORI Concomitant alterations in intragastric pH and ascorbic acid concentration in patients with Helicobacter pylori gastritis and associated iron deficiency anaemia

Background: Seroepidemiological and clinical studies suggest that Helicobacter pylori may cause iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) in the absence of peptic lesions by undefined mechanisms, which still remain to be fully elucidated. Gastric acidity and ascorbic acid (AA) promote iron absorption. AA is lowered in the presence of H pylori infection. H pylori can cause atrophic body gastritis with achlo...

Comparison of the Effect of Cydonia oblonga and Phyllanthus Emblica on Gastric Residual Volume and Pulmonary Aspiration in Patients under Mechanical Ventilation in Mousavi Hospital ICU of Zanjan in 2020

Background and Objective: The gastric residual volume has a direct effect on the volume and timing of the subsequent feeding and causes gastric emptying and pulmonary aspiration. The present study compares the effect of Cydonia oblonga and Phyllanthus Emblica (Amla) fruit on gastric residual volume and pulmonary aspiration in mechanically- ventilated patients. Materials and Methods: This is a...
